The Lord of the Rings is an epic fantasy novel written by English author J.R.R. Tolkien. It was first written as a sequel to Tolkien's fantasy novel The Hobbit, published in 1937, but it developed into its own three book series. The Lord of the Ring series consists of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.
